19/06/2005 | THE TRANSNATIONAL RADICAL PARTY JOINS THE INDIGENOUS PEOPLES TO DEMONSTRATE FOR FREEDOM AND DEMOCRACY IN VIETNAM ON THE OCCASION OF THE MEETING BETWEEN THE US PRESIDENT AND THE VIETNAMESE PRIME MINISTER

On June 21, the Transnational Radical Party (TRP) will join the demonstration convened in Washington by four groups of indigenous peoples living in Vietnam, on the occasion of the meeting between the US President George W. Bush and the Prime Minister of Vietnam Phan Van Khai.

The demonstration will be held in Washington at Freedom Plaza (Pennsylvania Av. between 13th e 14th St.) from 11.30 a.m. to 2.30 p.m. and will be convened by the Montagnard Foundation, the Khmers Kampuchea-Krom Federation, the World Hmong Congress and the Tai Solidarity International to call on the U.S. Government to consider the respect of human rights and the promotion of democracy in Vietnam as necessary conditions to establish favourable political and economic relations with the Vietnamese Government..

In a appeal addressed to the US President and Congress, the four organisations representing indigenous peoples stated:

"Since the United States is a country that has put the promotion of Human Rights and Democracy in the world at the centre of its foreign policy, we urge the US Congress and Government to use all its political and economic powers to pressure Vietnam to respect the basic rights of all the citizens of Vietnam. In particular, as representatives of indigenous peoples' organizations we call on the US Government to pay particular attention to the respect of the fundamental rights of the indigenous people of Indochina, namely the Montagnard Degar, The Khmer Krom, the Hmong and the Tai people.

Matteo Mecacci, TRP UN Representative, will participate in the demonstration on behalf of the TRP:

"Our presence in Washington besides the representatives of these peoples oppressed by the Vietnamese regime testifies our support to the nonviolent and organised answer to the repression by Hanoi. Over the last few years Vietnam has been trying - and this effort is still ongoing - to expel the TRP from the United Nations for its support to the Montagnard people and for giving the floor to their leader Kok Ksor, at the UN Commission on Human Rights. On Tuesday, the US President will be called to concretely reaffirm its support to the promotion of democracy also in Vietnam and we join the Vietnamese democracts, the Montagnards, the Khmers Krom, the Hmongs and the Tai in calling on him to condit any political and economic support To Vietnam to the effective increasing of civil liberties and human rights for all those who live in Vietnam."
