New York, 21 May 2004 – After three hours, of a substantive and procedural debate, that has forced the Chair to suspend the meeting for more than 30 minutes, the Committee on Non-Governmental organizations voted today on a request presented by Vietnam's Ambassador to the UN to suspend the Consultative relationship that the Transnational Radical Party enjoys with the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) of the UN.
Vietnam's request was supported by nine delegations: China, Ivory Coast, Cuba, Russian Federation, India, Iran, Pakistan, Sudan e Zimbabwe. Eight voted against: Cameroon, Chile, France, Germany, Peru, Romania, United States and Turkey. Colombia and Senegal abstained.
On 14 May last, Vietnam presented a document that reaffirmed past allegations of terrorism against Mr. Kok Ksor (President of the Montagnard Foundation and member of TRP's General Council) accusing the TRP of having violated its consultative relationship with the ECOSOC of the UN and requesting it not to accredit Mr. Ksor to future UN meetings. The TRP has always rejected the allegations and continued to accredit Mr. Ksor to UN events.
The Vietnamese Ambassador to the UN opened the afternoon session of Friday 21 May urging the committee to take action on his recommendation to suspend TRP' Consultative status for three years. After Vietnam's speech, Germany introduced a motion to defer the discussion in light of the new Vietnamese request. After the German motion was defeated, the committee took action on the Vietnamese request that was endorsed by China and Cuba.
The recommendation agreed upon on 21 May, will need to be ratified by the Substantive session of the ECOSOC that is scheduled for July at the UN Headquarters in New York. A live coverage of the vote (in Italian) can be retrieved at www.radioradicale.it selecting the the period from 2330 to 2400 of the 21 May programming.
